A COSMETOLOGY school agreed to a $2.8 million settlement after students claimed they weren't paid for their labor.
Cosmetology students filed a class action lawsuit that claimed the school they attended made them work off the clock.

Plaintiffs claim that the Douglas J. Holdings Institute, an Aveda cosmetology school, forced students to clean, do laundry, restock products, or perform sales tasks during student clinic hours even when they weren't clocked in.
The students argued that they should have been compensated for the work and that the school had violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying them for their full hours.
The institute agreed to pay $2.8 million to resolve the suit, according to the settlement website.
Under the settlement terms, class members can receive a cash payment based on the number of qualifying hours they work.

Students who attended Douglas J.’s cosmetology programs in Michigan and participated in the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and/or Salon Life courses between 2012 and 2022 are eligible to file a claim.
The cash reward will vary from student to student depending on how many hours they worked.
The deadline to file a claim is November 24.

Single filers will score $200 rebates while joint filers will be given $400.
Residents with a tax liability who filed a state income tax return for tax year 2022 are eligible for the cash.
Residents must have filed their taxes before July 1 in order to qualify.
All the rebates will be issued by November 30, but state officials believe most will be sent in early November.
“As Virginians continue to face inflation and high prices as a direct result of policies out of Washington, DC, these rebates are an important step going into the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money for gas, groceries, and essentials," said Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Meanwhile, a Missouri city has set aside $5 million for a new guaranteed basic income offering cash to residents for over a year.
