Fidelity down updates Thousands can't log in to website and get 'unable to provide information'

About the Johnson family

The founding Johnson family owns stock representing a 49 percent voting stake in FMR, both individually and through multiple trusts, and has signed agreements promising to vote all of their shares as a bloc.

Edward Johnson III was the group's chairman until his daughter, Abigail Johnson, took over.

Abigail was previously the largest single shareholder, with over 25 percent ownership, but it was reported in October 2005 that she had sold a "significant" amount of her shares to family trusts, raising questions about whether she was still in position to follow her father.

In 2014, Abigail was named CEO; in 2016, she was made Chairman.

Company history

The "Fidelity Fund" was renamed Fidelity Investments under Edward C. Johnson II and was formed in Massachusetts on May 1, 1930.

Because of several bank failures in 1930, the "Fidelity Fund" was the sole fund sanctioned by John C. Hull during his stint as Securities Director for Massachusetts during the Great Depression.

In 1946, the corporate structure was altered, and the company is now known as Fidelity Management & Research (FMR).
